Vocabulary

One of the least discussed risks in family business is not financial illiteracy, poor governance, or weak succession planning. It is linguistic erosion.

Families often notice when revenues decline, when markets shift, or when leadership weakens. Far fewer notice the moment their internal language begins to shrink. Conversations become shorter. Vocabulary becomes functional. Nuance disappears. Everything starts moving toward simplified categories: success or failure, loyalty or betrayal, yes or no.


The family may still be speaking constantly while no longer truly expressing itself.


This matters more than it appears.


A family enterprise survives across generations because it preserves the ability to describe complexity without collapsing into emotional simplification. The moment a family loses the words necessary to explain fear, ambiguity, resentment, gratitude, legitimacy, or doubt, those emotions do not disappear. They simply reappear in another form: silence, rigidity, aggression, avoidance, or permanent misunderstanding.


Many succession crises are therefore not leadership crises alone. They are failures of articulation.


A founder cannot explain why letting go feels like disappearance. The Next Generation cannot explain why inherited responsibility sometimes feels heavier than privilege. Siblings cannot distinguish between equality, fairness, recognition, and control. So everyone retreats into positions rather than conversations.


This is why sophisticated governance requires more than structures and policies. It requires preserving a family culture capable of sustaining layered conversations without immediately forcing resolution.


The strongest families are not necessarily the most educated or sophisticated financially. They are often the families capable of speaking precisely during moments of tension. They resist the modern temptation to compress everything into speed, slogans, reactions, and binary thinking.


Because once language becomes poor, interpretation becomes dangerous.

And once interpretation becomes dangerous, continuity slowly begins to fracture from within.


In the end, families do not only transmit wealth, assets, or ownership across generations.


They transmit the vocabulary through which future generations will understand themselves, each other, and the meaning of remaining together.
