The Drift

In families where the number of members tends to expand over time, we often observe a gradual shift. As the second generation gives way to the third, and then the fourth, the circle widens, expectations multiply, and complexity increases. In this environment, there is sometimes a temptation among those who lead to simplify their role, particularly because it becomes more difficult to engage, to address, to communicate, and to share with a larger and more diverse family-base.


A quiet reasoning can take hold: I provide, I maintain, I respond to their needs, what more is expected of me?


At first glance, the logic feels sound. Distributions are made, lifestyles are preserved, and the family appears stable. Yet beneath this surface, something more subtle begins to shift.


When leadership defines its role through provision alone, it unintentionally creates distance. Siblings and extended family members remain connected to the enterprise, but not truly part of its life. They receive, but are not invited to understand. They benefit, but are not asked to contribute. Over time, this alters the internal fabric of the family. Silence settles in, not as harmony, but as distance. Decision-making becomes more concentrated. Communication becomes selective. Authority gathers, quietly, in fewer hands.


This is how a family can gradually move toward a form of soft-autocracy, without ever intending to.


The difficulty is that this evolution feels justified. Those in power believe they are acting responsibly. They preserve stability, avoid tension, and ensure continuity. Yet when stability is not shared, it weakens the broader family. Ownership becomes passive. Engagement fades. The sense of belonging thins out.


The most delicate risk lies in what appears to be care. By removing friction, by deciding on behalf of others, by keeping control in the name of efficiency, leadership can unintentionally limit the growth of those around it. Authority remains well-intentioned, but it becomes closed.


Enduring families choose a different path. They open decision-making, even when it is uncomfortable. They communicate with clarity, not selectively. They create space for others to step forward, to learn, and to assume responsibility over time.
