The Family’s Center of Gravity

Every family enterprise has a centre of gravity.
It is not written in the ownership structure or defined by the governance framework. It is the idea around which every important decision eventually revolves.
For one generation, it may be survival. For another, growth. Later, it becomes preserving wealth. Eventually, it may become avoiding risk.
The centre rarely changes overnight. It shifts so gradually that few people notice. Yet once it moves, everything moves with it. Investments become more cautious. Leadership becomes less adventurous. Innovation gives way to preservation. Without intending to, the family begins protecting what it has instead of creating what comes next.
This is how successful families slowly become spectators of their own future.
The strongest families recognize this danger. Every generation asks a simple but uncomfortable question: What has become the centre of our decisions?
If the answer is fear, the family will become defensive. If it is comfort, the family will become complacent. If it is status, the family will become inward looking.
But if the centre remains creation, learning and contribution, the family continues to renew itself, regardless of changing markets or changing leaders.
